Hand auf's Herz

Inspired by the fantasies of escape humorously portrayed in the Work-Life-Ballet’s dance piece—which made palpable the longing for liberation from the cycle of relentless self-improvement— I took the unintentional errors in my draft text as an opportunity to break free from the habit of mercilessly eliminating mistakes and instead let myself be inspired by my own errors.

Thus, the work-life balance became the orc-life equilibrium. The term “orc” is commonly translated as “ghost” and is etymologically associated with the Latin “Orcus,” the underworld. The orc enslaves all beings weaker than itself and cannot be defeated, only deceived. In my view, the figure of the orc serves as a metaphor for self-exploitative working conditions in which employees devote their labor to the point of complete exhaustion for the sake of external goals (the “Dark Lord” / the company), where work is glorified as a source of identity while simultaneously robbing people of their identity.

J.R.R. Tolkien, who revived the figure of the orc in his stories, once remarked that under the pressure of extreme performance demands, any person can become an “orc”—a cog in an industrial machine. The orc is a powerful symbol of the loss of one’s own life to an overpowering, exploitative structure in which the individual becomes the “orc of one’s own labor.”

Hand auf's Herz:
Was treibt uns an, früh aufzustehen?
Hand auf's Herz:
Was treibt uns an, gut auszusehen?
Hand auf's Herz:
Was treibt uns an, uns zu vergleichen
und den Ellenbogen auszuweichen,
die gemeinsam mit uns konkurrieren
und dabei aus lauter Angst

diesen Wettstreit zu verlieren,

ihr Seelenfeuer nicht mehr spüren?

Hand auf's Herz:
Wir konkurrieren um die Illusion,
der exklusiven Perfektion
unserer Daseinslegitimation.
