The dance city of Freiburg has various places that the independent scene regularly uses. These include stages, studios for rehearsals and research, and pop-up galleries. Here we give you an overview.

Venues

E-WERK Freiburg

E-WERK Freiburg offers the young and innovative cultural scene a forum, with around 400 events in dance, theatre, music, and visual arts every year. Intercultural and cultural education are particular focuses. The spectrum ranges from smaller projects to international festivals, with numerous new productions and performances by independent theatre and dance ensembles, rock and/pop concerts, but also concerts of classical and new music, and exhibitions.

E-WERK Freiburg is particularly keen to promote the independent professional dance scene. As part of the TANZPAKT Stadt-Land-Bund excellence funding programme, the E-WERK is a cooperation partner for numerous formats of Tanznetz Freiburg. The 0.75 position of dance programme curator was filled in 2023 with Stephanie Moers. A 0.5 position in lighting technology filled by Natalie Stark, specialises in dance productions.

SÜDUFER

DANCE – THEATRE – PERFORMANCE

Venue of the Freiburg Independent Scene

The SÜDUFER venue offers professional Freiburg artists and collectives space, regardless of the form, to temporarily try out, experiment, explore a style and try themselves out. In addition to artist residencies, the implementation of the “TanzPakt” and artistic research, the SÜDUFER offers a platform for productions, workshops, as a rehearsal space and for the youth art parkour. Under the direction of the E-WERK Freiburg, the SÜDUFER is intended to stimulate an open process of research and artistic exchange and to encourage and support artists to deal with central questions of their own artistic work and beyond in their work.

THEATER FREIBURG

The Freiburg Theatre is home to the drama, music theatre, dance & performance and the Young Theatre departments. It considers itself to be a place of artistic variety and diversity.

Own and co-productions, as well as guest performances are produced and presented on four stages in house. Since the 2017/2018 season and under the direction of Peter Carp, the dance department has been directed and curated by Dr. Adriana Almeida Pees. The dance programme shows a wide variety of facets and forms of expression of contemporary dance on all stages of the theatre and makes these visible and tangible in unusual places in urban areas. In addition to the numerous, mostly international guest performances, the dance department of the Freiburg Theatre has an artistic residencies programme aimed at both national and international artists.

Schopf2
